Experimental and numerical study on progressive damage and failure in composite laminates during open-hole compression tests

Progressive damages in the open-hole compression (OHC) tests of composite laminates were experimentally and numerically studied. In experiment, failure mechanisms investigated via situ microscopy observation, digital image correlation, X-ray radiography, computed tomography. Three layups tested to examine dependence progressive on layups. Additionally, numerical simulation was conducted comprehensively mechanisms. studies, scheme, considering plasticity, kink-band failure, multiple intra-laminar cracks, delamination, developed. From experiment simulation, it is clarified that initiated propagated by combined stress states consisting longitudinal in-plane shear around cracks. Therefore, for high-fidelity OHC various layups, necessary capture interaction between cracks state criteria modeling
